GREENBELT

The National Capital Greenbelt

The National Capital Greenbelt is a 20,000-hectare rural landscape that is a distinguishing feature of Ottawa, providing a separation between the urban area within the Greenbelt and the urban communities that have been established just beyond it. The Greenbelt is a mosaic of land uses and facilities. It contains Natural Environment Areas, such as the Mer Bleue Bog, Stony Swamp and other critical wildlife habitat, that remain linked, although tenuously, to other large natural landscapes in the rural area of Ottawa and beyond. Farming continues as a viable economic activity on Agriculture Resource land. Other economic activities include government and private-sector research and development facilities, as well as the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. The Greenbelt also contains large-scale community facilities such as the Nepean Sportsplex, the Queensway-Carleton Hospital and the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre as well as several schools and churches. The Greenbelt is one of the world?s largest urban parks and is a destination of choice for many hikers, cyclists and cross-country skiers annually.

For more information on the Greenbelt campaign or to get involved on the committee, please contact the CPAWS-OV office by e-mail at jmcdonnell@cpaws.org or call at (613) 232-7297.
